Eastover Grace
We are always exploring ways to redefine our local vernacular through contemporary designs that are of this place, of this region. Our client wanted something that could cross the boundary of traditional, as expected in Eastover, Charlotte, yet contemporary in the way their home lives and feels. They wanted something unique with a cottage look to fit the streetscape. However, the program for this growing family demanded far more than a simple small cottage. The solution was a home that was scaled appropriately and comfortable, as you would expect in the south. The larger swooping front gable and wing wall to the auto court concealed the larger mass of the home in the background. We wanted to maintain a regional reference in the architectural language as well. Knowing that our client had close southern roots, we felt that it was important to create that emotional connection. The culmination of the design process led to this effortless, open plan with southern charm. Over years, we expect the aged cedar wood roof to patina, and the carefully planned landscape(by Bruce Clodfelter, LA) to mature in place as if this home was here for an unknown time. The contrast of aged exteriors with expansive windows and daylit open rooms fit with the story and personality of the new homeowners. Charlie Collins thoughtfully complemented and continued the storyline through the interiors with carefully selected furnishings and finishes all of which seem to strike a perfect balance of modern living with southern comfort...
