In general about the project... We are always exploring ways to redefine our local vernacular through contemporary designs that are of this place, of this region. Our client also wanted to break the mold of traditional expectations here in Charlotte, so it was a perfect match. They wanted something unique and contemporary. On the other hand they wanted a home that was scaled appropriately and comfortable, like you would expect in the south. We wanted to maintain a regional reference in the architectural language. Knowing that our client had close agricultural roots, growing up on a farm etc., we felt that it was important to create that emotional connection to this past. The culmination of the design process led to a simple, knife edge gable structure that is reminiscent of rural barns. Over years, we expect the aged cedar strip wood cladding on the front gable to patina, to a weathered old barn hue. (like in this rendering) The contrast of old materials on the top to the modern base of the home, made for a compelling story that aligned perfectly with the story and personality of the new homeowners.
